1940 Potato Special B Allis Chalmers made several special variations of the Model B. One was the Potato Special. It was a narrow model to use in potato farming. Very few were produced, to my knowledge on a handful exist today. There are several distinct features, narrow adjustable front axel, short straight fenders, seat is 6" narrower than the regular B, 28" offset wheels, the angle iron fender brackets are reversed and the hand brake levers are between fender and tire. In the Dealers B Parts Book it is referred to as the 36" Tread Tractor.
I had searched all over the country for one these and my good friend Fred Lucabaugh from Hanover, PA. found this one in a local newspaper ad. Fred went to look at it on a Saturday afternoon, called me and asked me if I wanted it. I told him yes and told him I would put a check in the mail Monday, which I did. I told him I would come and get it as soon as possible. My Brother-in-Law Ron Irwin from Oklahoma was here visiting at the time, we were talking and he asked me what projects I was working on now. So I told him about the Potato B in PA. I had just bought and had to go get sometime. He, just kidding, said lets jump in your truck and go get it. I called his bluff, we left Tuesday to go to Fred's to get it. Beat my check there, said to Fred, "check is in the mail". |
